Sunsets by Ambleway is out on the App Store

Impulse Arc has released Sunsets by Ambleway, a free iPhone app that forecasts tonight's sunset and says when and where to watch it.

The app shows this evening's sky in its forecast colors, with a score out of five and a verdict from gray dusk to cancel dinner. The score comes from cloud height, whether the western horizon is open enough for light to get under the cloud, and air clarity. Most evenings score low, and the app says so.

The whole evening

Sunsets gives the evening minute by minute: when to be in position, when the first color arrives in the west, when it peaks, when it fades, and when it will be dark enough to need a headlamp. Six evenings are forecast at once.

A map shows the same forecast across a region. Cloud banks are shaded by whether they block the light or catch it, and every viewpoint carries the same score.

Where to stand

Viewpoints come from Ambleway's trail catalogue: short walks to a sunset perch, with the time to leave, distance, climb, the walk back, and whether it will need a headlamp. Each walk is rated for distance from roads and houses, and marked if the car is visible from the perch.

Optionally, the app sends one notification about 90 minutes before sunset, only on evenings that beat a score you choose.

Availability

Sunsets by Ambleway is free on the App Store, with no account and no advertising. The forecast works anywhere. Sunset walks are available where Ambleway's trail catalogue has been built, listed at ambleway.com/coverage.
